I am a potter and art teacher from midcoast Maine creating objects to brighten your day.  My work usually falls into one of three categories: Illustrated porcelain vessels, woodfired vessels, and critters.  Illustrated porcelain is fired in my Lincolnville studio to cone 6 in an electric kiln.  The drawings are created by engraving the images into the surface of the wet clay with a needle tool, then inlaying cobalt glaze into the grooves.  The blue is then fired into the clay during bisque firing, and later covered by clear glaze.  My woodfired work is fired in Swanville in Jody Johnstone's anagama- a traditional Japanese kiln style.  The firing takes place over the course of several weeks: first loading many many pots into the kiln, then firing by continuously stoking the kiln with wood, and a long cooling period before the unloading.  A crew of potters work together around the clock to make the firing happen, trading off shifts at the kiln and sharing home cooked meals on handmade pottery.  Whether the work comes from the anagama or the electric kiln, I try to infuse each piece with elements and oddities from nature, history, science, and imagination.  I am inspired by how bizarre life on this planet can be, and how wild it is to be human, living here, now.
